When you look at modern custom home blueprints, you will frequently see a series of overlapping, decorative front gables.
 
On the page, they look fantastic. In the field, they are a scheduling and budgeting nightmare for a self-builder.
 
Most drafting programs automatically design these complex rooflines using pre-manufactured truss packages. If you blindly follow that path, you will pay a massive design premium to a truss plant, wait weeks for delivery, and end up with a forest of complex valleys, flashing traps, and intersecting framing layers that are prone to leaking during winter builds.
